We present the results of strength and crack-growth resistance tests of Hardox-400 low-carbon highstrength steel within the temperature range from – 100 to 20°С. The data of microfractographic analysis reveal the presence of various mechanisms of fracture of specimens with cracks (from brittle to ductile). The distributions of local stresses and strains in the specimen in the vicinity of a crack tip are obtained as a result of modeling and numerical calculations. By analyzing the numerical results and specific features of the fracture surfaces, we establish the critical level of normal stresses such that, for stresses higher than this level, the fracture mechanism becomes brittle. The analyses of the levels of stresses and strains enable us to substantiate the mixed brittle–ductile fracture mechanism.
