The main source of fly ash is the energy sector. Consequently, there is a need to utilise this massive waste material. One of the proposed utilisation methods is zeolitisation of fly ash and the use of its sorption properties. The tests have been performed on coal ash taken from the electrofilters of the Kielce heat and power plant. The impact of the chemical and physical activation of ash on its sorption properties has been determined. The chemical modification has been focused on the appplication of NaOH into fly ash under certain temparature and pressure conditions, while the physical modification has been based on periodic freezing and defreezing of moistened samples. The aim of the physical modification has been to symulate the impact of decay processes in ash dumping conditions on surface properties of ash with the focus on the application of ash as sorbents. The morfology investigations of fly ash grains before and after modification have been performed with a scanning electron microscope. The impact of the structure change of single ash grains on their sorption properties has been assessed. The level of absorption has been tested on a model stand with a spectrofotometric method with the use of methylene blue. The development of zeolitization and sorption processes have been evaluated with established parameters (NaOH concentration, temperature, reaction time).
