The interaction effect of the simultaneous-sustained stress and sodium sulphate solution attack on the deterioration rate of concrete has been experimentally noted. Time-dependent deformations, their recovery and residual strength indicate that the effect of compression on the behaviour of concrete under sulphate attack depends on the stress level. The effect seems to be much more significant for severe attack. On the other hand, sulphate corrosion is accelerated by flexural stress of any value.
