The need to protect environment and reduce global warming effect has resulted in considerable efforts to provide technologies with the ability to lower the temperatures of asphalt concrete mixing and compaction. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technologies, with their potential to lower production and placement temperatures by about 30 degrees C, will not ensure the expected outcomes. A significant reduction in those temperatures can be obtained with Half Warm Mix Asphalt (HWMA) technologies. New asphalt concrete was developed, containing foamed bitumen and produced at 95 degrees C. Prior to foaming, the bitumen was modified with synthetic wax in the amount of 1.0 to 2.5%. The modification made before foaming gave the asphalt concrete standard characteristic such as air voids contents, comparable with those of mixtures prepared with hot mix asphalt technologies. Another important stage of the research included the evaluation of the asphalt concrete resistance to moisture and frost versus the synthetic wax amount added as the foamed bitumen modifier.
