The paper presents the Acoustic Emission Method of identification and location of active destructive processes (IADP) and their application to the monitoring of the technical state of an overpass. The method is based on the measurement and analysis of acoustic emission signals, collected under service load, and then their comparison with the reference data base created for single damage processes. The reference data base was created during laboratory tests using multi parameters analysis and grouping AE signals into classes corresponding to different destructive processes. Comparing AE signals, with this data base it possible to identify and locate destructive processes that occurred within the structure. The method was applied to monitor of an overpass scheduled for demolition. Controlling traffic on the overpass and monitoring the damage processes, the overpass time period in service was extended by six years. This enabled to design temporary traffic arrangements and to obtain funds for the construction of a new object.
