Abstract:

A simple model to estimate keyhole depth during laser welding is presented. The model is based on energy balance between the radiation absorbed by keyhole walls and the heat flow in the horizontal direction. The calculations done for solid and liquid phases give lower and upper estimates of keyhole depth.
