Abstract:

A simple phenomenological model of the central crack tension elastic-plastic specimen containing a growing crack is presented. The aim of the paper is to provide a tool to visualize the influence of the basic geometrical and material parameters on the shape of the force-displacement curves observed during standard experiments performed in order to measure fracture parameters and fracture resistance curves (e.g. J R curves). In the model the classical as well as modified Dugdale models have been utilized. The analysis, although qualitative, provides information on the fracture processes themselves and may be a helpful tool in designing an experimental program.
