The paper presents the method of producing an aluminized layer on magnesium. The process of the aluminizing treatment was realized with the use of aluminium paste in vacuum furnace. The aluminized layer formed on magnesium substrate had a thickness 120-150 pm and was uniformly distributed. The microstructure of the aluminized coating was investigated by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the phases was determined by the electron microprobe analysis. The results indicate that the obtained aluminized layer shows a eutectic structure and consists of Mgl7All2 intermetallic compound and the solid solution of aluminium in magnesium. Zone of solid solution of aluminium in magnesium occurs as a transient region between layer of eutectic structure and magnesium. Microhardness test was carried out. The hardness of the layer was within the range 183-201 HV0.1 and was about 5-times higher than the hardness of the magnesium substrate.
